New Member Reading Group
New Member Reading Group
May 2, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Everyone new to socialist activism is invited to a four session intro reading group on the basics of socialism which will be based on Jacobin's lively pamphlet, “The ABC’s of Socialism”.
The group starts on Monday April 11 and runs for four weeks (Mondays, April 18, 25 and May 2). All sessions are 7:00-8:30 PM.
To Register:
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0rdemrrDktEtS5wTOnYZiRmvFXmrPh6X-E
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
Each session will discuss a few questions raised in “ABCs” that are the kind you are likely to get into with workmates, family members or fellow activists.
Topics will include, among many others: “Why do socialists talk so much about workers?”, “Doesn’t socialism always end in dictatorship?”, and “Don’t the rich deserve to keep most of their money?”
We want this reading group to provide a basic knowledge of socialist goals and analysis in a low-key atmosphere which, we hope, will make learning fun and motivate new DSA’ers to get more deeply involved in the work of our chapter.
"The ABCs of Socialism" can be downloaded here:
https://s3.jacobinmag.com/issues/jacobin-abcs.pdf.
Reading schedule for each session:
April 18
“Isn’t America already kind of socialist?”
“But at least capitalism is free and democratic, right?”
April 11
“Why do socialists talk so much about workers?”
“Don’t the rich deserve to keep all of their money?”
April 25
“What about racism? Don’t socialists only care about class?
“Doesn’t socialism always end up in dictatorship?
“Wouldn’t a more democratic world just mean a bigger environmental crisis?
“Is socialism a western concept?”
May 2
“Aren’t socialism and feminism sometimes in conflict?”
“Will socialists take my Kenny Loggins records?”
“Will socialism be boring?”

Mental Health Working Group Monthly Meeting
Mental Health Working Group Monthly Meeting
May 3, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
The Mental Health Working Group aims to investigate, discuss, and confront the deleterious effects of capitalism on mental health. We address the material and emotional needs and respect and support the autonomy of neurodivergent individuals and those who struggle with substance use disorders.
The Mental Health Working Group's current projects include:
* The Comrade Rosie Project, comrade-rosie.org, a creative, collaborative, mental health support network, by and for the working class of Greater Boston.
* Monthly Peer Support Sessions, on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, a space where leftists can help each other process life under COVID and under capitalism
* Red Roses Writing Workshop, bit.ly/RedRosesWriting, a low-key creative workshop on the fourth Friday of every month. Comrades are encouraged to bring 1 poem or 2 pages of prose writing to share.
* Chill With Comrades, a social hangout on the 4th Tuesday of every month. Though hangin' on Zoom is not the same as socializing with socialists in person, this provides some unstructured time to get to know your comrades and remember that we are all just people, not organizing machines.
* The MHWG Google site, https://sites.google.com/view/wg-mentalhealth, to facilitate long-form writing, in homage to the historical "committees of correspondence"
* The Epoch of Incredulity, https://anchor.fm/epoch-of-incredulity, the working group's least safe for work side project. Since we cannot go to cheap dive bars after meetings anymore, the MHWG has attempted to recreate the experience via podcast.
We serve as a resource for other Boston DSA members as much as we serve the larger community. Thus, people need not be reserved about their struggles or hesitant to ask for help.
The Mental Health Working Group meets monthly on the first Tuesday of every month from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have moved all our meetings to Zoom. If you have any questions or for a copy of the agenda, check out the #wg-mentalhealth channel on the BDSA Slack, or email us at mentalhealth@bostondsa.org.

Political Education Working Group
Political Education Working Group
May 26, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Boston, MA
"It’s in making decisions that we learn to decide." - Paolo Friere, Pedagogy of Freedom
Boston DSA's Political Education Working Group meets on the last Thursday of every month at 7 pm, unless we have to move it for a holiday, which happens more often than you'd think. In our April meeting, we will continue our reading and discussion group of the Communist Manifesto and read the third and fourth chapter of the Manifesto, “Socialist and Communist Literature” and “Position of the Communists in Relation to the Various Existing Opposition Parties”.
PEWG's goal is to provide our members with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to organize effectively and strategically, and to educate the wider public on DSA's vision for a socialist future and the often-erased leftist movements of the past.
PEWG hosts a number of ongoing projects, such as the chapter's political education blog (bostonpewg.org), our Socialist Night School series, and periodic New Member Reading Groups (abcsofsocialism@gmail.com). We also run one-time (or a-few-times) events such as reading groups, lectures, and panel discussions; and work with other working groups in the chapter to run political education events related to their areas of organization.
Due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, working group meetings and events will be held over Zoom until it is safe to meet in person. You can request to join the working group mailing list, where we send out meeting agendas and Zoom links, at https://groups.google.com/g/boston-dsa-education-wg. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us at education@bostondsa.org.

In addition to one-time events and socialist feminist political education, we are developing a project to expose fake abortion clinics in the Boston area. To learn more or in join the working group, please email socialistfeminism@bostondsa.org to be added to our listserv. Each month's Zoom link will be emailed out to the listserv the day of the meeting. (Due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, all meetings are Zoom only until further notice.)
