Cambridge Eviction Defense Canvass
Cambridge Eviction Defense Canvass
January 3, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Fill out form for location
The Massachusetts legislature has failed us, bowing to pressure from landlords and choosing not to extend the statewide moratorium on evictions. The moratorium expired October 17th, and massive numbers of tenants statewide have already received notices to quit (the first step in the eviction process). Join Boston DSA's Housing Working group in Cambridge at 12PM as we let tenants know about their rights and what resources are available, and connect with tenants to prepare to fight back.
We will be taking social distancing precautions, and may not have access to enough transportation for everyone. Having access to a car or a bicycle is highly recommended. Masks are mandatory.

Political Education Working Group
Political Education Working Group
January 7, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Boston Democratic Socialists of America Boston MA United States 02205
"It’s in making decisions that we learn to decide." - Paolo Friere, Pedagogy of Freedom
Boston DSA's Political Education Working Group meets on the last Thursday of every month at 7 pm, unless we have to move it for a holiday, which happens more often than you'd think. PEWG's goal is to provide our members with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to organize effectively and strategically, and to educate the wider public on DSA's vision for a socialist future and the often-erased leftist movements of the past.
PEWG hosts a number of ongoing projects, such as the chapter's political education blog (bostonpewg.org), our Socialist Fundamentals and Socialist Book Report lecture series, and periodic New Member Reading Groups. We also run one-time (or a-few-times) events such as reading groups, lectures, and panel discussions; and work with other working groups in the chapter to run political education events related to their areas of organization.
Due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, working group meetings and events will be held over Zoom only until it is safe to meet in person. You can request to join the working group mailing list, where we send out meeting agendas and Zoom links, at https://groups.google.com/g/boston-dsa-education-wg. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us at education@bostondsa.org.

Unite Against Trump's Coup and the Far Right!
Unite Against Trump's Coup and the Far Right!
January 7, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Front Steps of MA State House
COME TOGETHER TO OUTNUMBER AND UNITE AGAINST THE FAR RIGHT!
Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building today to protest the completely unfounded claims of a rigged election.
Over the summer the National Guard in Minneapolis shot rubber bullets at people for standing on their own front porch, but today Trump supporters storming the Congressional Chambers met hardly any resistance.
The election results won’t be overturned and Trump is almost out of the White House, but if it wasn’t clear before, it’s clear now: the far right is not going away!
No matter who is in the White House, our best defense against the far right is a millions-strong mass movement. We need unity of all working people, progressives, community groups, labor unions, and socialists to send the far right packing. Tell everybody you know!

Rent Control Campaign: Cancel the Rent!
Rent Control Campaign: Cancel the Rent!
January 12, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Boston Democratic Socialists of America Boston MA United States 02205
COVID-19 is exacerbating the housing crisis. Rents continue to rise, the landlord class prospers, and the working class continues to get squeezed. But our chapter is part of the growing movement to change all of this. We are putting principles into action and loudly saying: housing is a human right!
Boston DSA has formed a Rent Control Campaign to coordinate housing justice issues in the current moment. We will organize to fight for the immediate demand of today-- an emergency cancellation of rent and mortgages -- and pave the way for further mobilizations to win state-wide rent control.

Boston, MA
Join us for the January General Meeting on Saturday January 16th, from 2 to 4 pm, as we reflect on the year gone by, and take stock of what must be done in the year to come. Chapter Priorities are the topic of the January General Meeting, where we'll reflect on the work we've done for last year's priorities, and outline the candidates for priorities for the coming year. Along with the presentation on priorities, we'll also be featuring a friendly debate on how DSA as an organization should proceed going forward, the issue: Should we focus our organizing around base building, or electoral campaigns?
After the meeting, feel free to hang out on the line for some socializing with socialists!
All of Boston DSA’s general meetings are open to the public, so if you are not yet a member but are curious about our organizing work (or about socialism more generally), you are most welcome to attend!

Mass Demonstrations and Boston DSA
Mass Demonstrations and Boston DSA
January 17, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Boston Democratic Socialists of America Boston MA United States 02205
Frederick Douglass once said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress. The struggle may be a moral one or it may be a physical one, or it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has and it never will.”
It is through mass movements that all progress in this country has been won, from the 8-hour day to Civil Rights. How to build, grow, maintain, organize, and lead mass movements is a topic of critical importance to socialists as we continue to fight against the fascist far-right and push for radical change under the new Biden administration. Calling and organizing mass demonstrations is one tactic among many in building such mass movements.
Please join Boston DSA for a discussion on the strategy, tactics, and logistics of mass demonstrations and activism. We will discuss the theory and practice of organizing mass demonstrations and discuss ways the Boston DSA chapter can expand its demonstration organizing capacity.
Some topics we will discuss include: What is the theory and strategy for calling mass demonstrations? What has Boston DSA’s organizing around demonstrations been like in the past and how can we improve upon it? How are mass demonstrations organized? What differentiates a mass demo from other kinds of actions? What are the sort of logistical needs and activist roles needed for pulling off successful demonstrations? And, what are the next steps to putting these ideas into action?
Register on ActionNetwork: https://actionnetwork.org/events/mass-demonstrations-and-boston-dsa
Please note that this is an event for members of Boston DSA. Sign up with your DSA-affiliated email address as we will be cross-referencing with membership records. With any questions, contact follo.tim@gmail.com

The pandemic has affected everyone, but it has hit essential workers, the working class, and the disadvantaged the hardest. Profits are up for the wealthy, workers are forced to risk their lives, and the far right has attempted a coup. The police treated those who invaded the capitol far more gently than those who protested police brutality. It is clear where the sympathies of the police are.
Trump was voted out. However, this is not a mandate for Biden and Harris. While Trump would have been a catastrophic failure, Biden is a manageable failure. Many who voted for Biden were really voting for “Not Trump”. We can and must do better than this. Biden is tied to the 1994 crime bill, concentration camps on the border, and drone killings. Harris has gone out her way as a prosecutor to put oppressed people behind bars. This is class war.
Don’t look to Biden and Harris for salvation. You won’t get it from them. The well off only understand power, and our power, as the people, is mass organization. It is our only way forwards. We need to organize and fight for what we need. No more police brutality. No more unchecked pandemic. No more families torn apart. No more bailouts for the wealthy that leave the rest of us behind. No more white nationalism. Enough!
1. We demand an immediate bailout of working people and the oppressed, not the wealthy elites: cash payments & unemployment benefits, end evictions & foreclosures, free education for all.
2. We demand immediate hazard pay for all workers outside the home. Sick pay when you are quarantined. No protection for employers who endanger the health of workers. Workers should not have to work if they feel their health and safety are endangered.
3. We demand an end to police brutality. Jail Killer Cops! Reopen all past cases of police murder and brutality! We demand the immediate restoration of affirmative action and other programs providing reparations. Black Lives Matter!
4. We demand Indigenous sovereignty! Restore Native lands! #NoKXL and stop the pipelines! No development without full Indigenous consent. Increase federal funding for IHS and Native American nations to fight COVID.
5. We demand equal rights for women, with immediate free government funded childcare, gender pay equity, full reproductive rights , and that perpetrators of domestic violence be held accountable.
6. We demand initiatives to address the problems faced by transgender people. End attacks against transgender folks now.
7. We demand universal free healthcare for all who reside in the US, regardless of immigration status. Opioid, other addictions, and mental health must be treated as healthcare crises NOT law enforcement issues.
8. We demand that all undocumented residents have immediate access to driver’s licenses and permanent legal resident status. Immediate citizenship for all youth in the DACA & for all those with TPS. Halt deportations and release detainees. Close the camps. Reunite the families!
9. We demand the cancellation of all student, medical, and credit card debt.
10. We demand a massive public works program at union wages to construct universal guaranteed housing, hospitals, daycare, and other services for all residing in the US.
11. We demand the closing of military bases all over the world. End all the wars! & blockades. Use the war budget to provide for our needs. We demand an end to the blockades of Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, and N. Korea.
12. We demand action on Climate change. It is a threat to human existence. We demand federally funded massive programs to address the climate change crisis, mass transportation, energy conservation, ecologically sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy sources that drastically reduce the production of greenhouse gases. We demand climate justice.

Energy Democracy 101: Why Massachusetts Needs Public Utilities
Energy Democracy 101: Why Massachusetts Needs Public Utilities
January 22, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Online
In part one of this two-part webinar series, we will discuss how private utility corporations profit while harming Massachusetts residents, and how public utilities are the solution. Join us to learn how you can help democratize, decarbonize, decommodify, and decolonize our energy system. REGISTRATION REQUIRED: bit.ly/publicpowerma
Utility debt has ballooned over the past year. Thousands of families across Massachusetts struggle under the weight of this debt, compounded by evictions, unemployment, and the coronavirus. But debt and shutoffs, caused by a market-based system, have plagued MA residents long before the pandemic. The current situation further exposes the failure of investor-owned utilities. As the deadline looms for the April 1 utility shutoff moratorium, we demand utility debt relief in the short term and energy democracy in the long term.
Join us for part 2 "Utility Debt Relief and the Pandemic" on Thursday 1/28, 7-8:30 pm: Utility Debt Relief and the Pandemic
This session will explore the pandemic’s impact on utility debt and existing programs for debt relief. With a guest presentation from incoming state representative Erika Uyterhoeven (Somerville, 27th Middlesex), we will present just energy solutions that prioritize the needs of MA residents. REGISTRATION REQUIRED: bit.ly/debtreliefma

There's no meeting agenda for this event, no readings to do in advance, just show up and have a good time! If you have any questions at all, feel free to email us at, mentalhealth@bostondsa.org. AfroSoc & Socialists of Color Monthly Hangout
AfroSoc & Socialists of Color Monthly Hangout
January 28, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
https://https://actionnetwork.org/events/boston-dsa-afrosocialists-socialists-of-color-caucus-hangout/
Calling all leftists of color! Boston DSA AfroSocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus is hosting a hangout on Zoom to discuss how to build a strong, diverse, and organized Left -- and why BIPOC socialists in Boston and beyond might consider joining DSA and getting active in Boston DSA.
DSA is the largest socialist organization in the United States, with 70K members, and growing daily. But we can only win radical demands like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All if our membership reflects the working class generally. Share how you're holding up during the Covid-19 pandemic, tell us your stories about what it means to you to be a leftist of color, and have a good time! Let’s build the bonds that can pull us closer to take on the fights ahead.

Political Education Working Group
Political Education Working Group
January 28, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
