Digital Security for Activists
Digital Security for Activists
April 3, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Boston, MA
Activist organizations that seek to be open, visible, and easy to join face some unique dilemmas. We want information about our organizations and our events to be easy to find, but we know there's no guarantee that the only people to find us will be friendly. For people to feel comfortable organizing with us, we need to be able to keep ourselves and our members safe without going "underground."
Boston DSA's Direct Action, De-escalation, and Security Committee is therefore pleased to host this training on digital security practices for DSA members and other activists. We will discuss general opsec for activists, informational security for protests, how not to get doxxed (and what to do if you are), and best practices for using social media to safely advertise events.
This training will be held over Zoom on Saturday, April 3, at 3 pm. Register for the call at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZApfu2hpjMjE9AhhFVG9kzwelFcmHGGhghh

Project Right to Housing Working Meeting
Project Right to Housing Working Meeting
April 5, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
https://brandeis.zoom.us/j/92058618679
Project Right to Shelter is phase 1 of a larger emerging Project Right to Housing. It demands that our elected officials take immediate action to protect the current homeless population under COVID-19 through temporary placement in hotel rooms, while also pressuring them to pass guaranteed housing legislation into law. Project Right to Housing is being piloted in Cambridge, MA, but it is easily replicable in other local communities across the nation. This project challenges local governments to adopt a housing first model. Once phase 1 is completed successfully then phase 2 will be enacted, which will ensure that all residents are provided with permanent housing within six months of their residence at a hotel or motel. We are at a critical juncture where we have made significant progress on attaining non-congregate shelter for unhoused community members in Cambridge, but while we continue to organize for this demand we are now ready to shift into building out phase 2 of this project.
Project Right to Shelter will not solve every struggle in the homeless community. It does not immediately alleviate the long-term issues that have left them to live on the streets. But it does grant residents protection and dignity in an incredibly vulnerable moment, and it does it in a way that benefits cities and communities. In the long term, through phase 2 of Project Right to Housing, we hope that this project will lead to a greater focus on the provision of housing and building support structures for every resident of our city, state, and country. In the meantime, now is our chance to demonstrate to the world that local communities truly care about all community members.
Read our proposal and get involved by attending our open weekly meetings on Mondays from 6-7pm.

Everyone new to socialist activism is invited to a four-session intro reading group on the basics of socialism.
Each session will discuss topics that are the kind you are likely to get into with workmates, family members or fellow activists. We want this reading group to provide a basic knowledge of socialist goals and analysis in a low-key atmosphere which, we hope, will make learning fun and motivate new DSA’ers to get more deeply involved in the work of our chapter. Mental Health Working Group
Mental Health Working Group
April 6, 2021 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Zoom
The Mental Health Working Group aims to investigate, discuss, and confront the deleterious effects of capitalism on mental health. We address the material and emotional needs and respect and support the autonomy of neurodivergent individuals and those who struggle with substance use disorders.
The Mental Health Working Group's current projects include:
* The Comrade Rosie Project, comrade-rosie.org, a creative, collaborative, mental health support network, by and for the working class of Greater Boston.
* Monthly Peer Support Sessions, on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, a space where leftists can help each other process life under COVID and under capitalism
* Red Roses Writing Workshop, bit.ly/RedRosesWriting, a low-key creative workshop on the fourth Friday of every month. Comrades are encouraged to bring 1 poem or 2 pages of prose writing to share.
* Chill With Comrades, a social hangout on the 4th Tuesday of every month. Though hangin' on Zoom is not the same as socializing with socialists in person, this provides some unstructured time to get to know your comrades and remember that we are all just people, not organizing machines.
* The MHWG Google site, https://sites.google.com/view/wg-mentalhealth, to facilitate long-form writing, in homage to the historical "committees of correspondence"
* The Epoch of Incredulity, https://anchor.fm/epoch-of-incredulity, the working group's least safe for work side project. Since we cannot go to cheap dive bars after meetings anymore, the MHWG has attempted to recreate the experience via podcast.
We serve as a resource for other Boston DSA members as much as we serve the larger community. Thus, people need not be reserved about their struggles or hesitant to ask for help.
The Mental Health Working Group meets monthly on the first Tuesday of every month from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have moved all our meetings to Zoom. If you have any questions or for a copy of the agenda, check out the #wg-mentalhealth channel on the BDSA Slack, or email us at mentalhealth@bostondsa.org.

Socialist Feminism Movie & Discussion Night
Socialist Feminism Movie & Discussion Night
April 9, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Boston Democratic Socialists of America Boston MA United States 02205
Virtual screening of “I Am Somebody”
Register for emailed zoom link: https://bit.ly/3u7yyD8
Please RSVP
Synopsis: “ Named to the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress, preserved by the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, and widely available for the first time, Madeline Anderson’s I AM SOMEBODY (1970), along with her pioneering INTEGRATION REPORT 1 (1960), the first known documentary directed by an African American woman, and A TRIBUTE TO MALCOLM X (1967), bring viewers to the front lines of the fight for civil rights.
In 1969, black female hospital workers in Charleston, South Carolina went on strike for union recognition and a wage increase, only to find themselves in a confrontation with the state government and the National Guard. Featuring Andrew Young, Charles Abernathy, and Coretta Scott King and produced by Local 1199, New York’s Drug and Hospital Union, I AM SOMEBODY is a crucial document in the struggle for labor rights.
Recognized as the first documentary ever directed by an African-American woman, INTEGRATION REPORT 1 examines the struggle for black equality in Alabama, Brooklyn and Washington, D.C., incorporating footage by documentary legends Albert Maysles and Ricky Leacock, protest songs by Maya Angelou, and a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr.”
Endorsed by Afro-Socialists & Socialists of Color Caucus and the Labor working group

Boston DSA 2021 Local Convention
Boston DSA 2021 Local Convention
April 17, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Boston, MA
Whoever said that socialists can never accomplish anything because we have to thoroughly debate every little decision was wrong. We can thoroughly debate all of our decisions and get a lot accomplished at the same time, thank you very much.
To see this dynamic in action come join us for Boston DSA’s Annual Convention, a bonus length meeting where we debate this year's bylaw amendments and chapter resolutions.
Guest speakers and Boston DSA members Erica Uyterhoeven (MA State Rep, 27th Middlesex) and Barbara Madeloni (Labor Notes; former President of Massachusetts Teachers Association) will also be there to address the membership.
If parliamentary action is what you crave, we've got plenty at this month's local convention from 2 - 4:30 PM.
Please join us! Your voice is valuable to our chapter and to our socialist future. And after the meeting, feel free to hang out on the line for some socializing with socialists!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this meeting will be held over Zoom. Please RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/boston-dsa-local-convention-april-17 . The Zoom link will be shared to all members who RSVP'd prior to the meeting.

Project Right to Housing Working Meeting
Project Right to Housing Working Meeting
April 19, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
https://brandeis.zoom.us/j/92058618679

New Member Reading Group
New Member Reading Group
April 19, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Everyone new to socialist activism is invited to a four-session intro reading group on the basics of socialism.
Each session will discuss topics that are the kind you are likely to get into with workmates, family members or fellow activists. Topics will include "What is democratic socialism?", “Why do socialists talk so much about workers?”; “Doesn’t socialism always end in dictatorship”; and “Don’t the rich deserve to keep most of their money?” among many others.
We want this reading group to provide a basic knowledge of socialist goals and analysis in a low-key atmosphere which, we hope, will make learning fun and motivate new DSA’ers to get more deeply involved in the work of our chapter. There will also be opportunities to learn about our different campaigns and how you can get involved
The first session will be on Monday March 29 and in total there will be four sessions (April 5th, 12th and 19th) There will be about 25 pages of reading for each session. We will be reading an intro text developed for this group complemented with some other articles.
To sign up, get more information about the zoom details, and to get a copy of the reading material, please reach out to abcsofsocialism@gmail.com

AfroSoc & Socialists of Color Monthly Hangout
April 22, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
https://actionnetwork.org/campaigns/boston-dsa-afrosocialists-socialists-of-color-caucus
Calling all leftists of color! Boston DSA AfroSocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus is hosting a hangout on Zoom to discuss how to build a strong, diverse, and organized Left -- and why BIPOC socialists in Boston and beyond might consider joining DSA and getting active in Boston DSA.
DSA is the largest socialist organization in the United States, with 70K members, and growing daily. But we can only win radical demands like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All if our membership reflects the working class generally. Share how you're holding up during the Covid-19 pandemic, tell us your stories about what it means to you to be a leftist of color, and have a good time! Let’s build the bonds that can pull us closer to take on the fights ahead.

Rally at 840 Columbus Avenue
April 25, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
840 Columbus Ave, Roxbury, MA 02120-2156, United States
Rally at the site of Northeastern's planned luxury dorm. Let's show Northeastern and the city that we demand better for students and working people!
We demand:
1. Stop gentrification: Northeastern administration and President Aoun should halt the plans to build a Luxury dorm at 840 Columbus Avenue
2. Build more AFFORDABLE housing: the Boston Planning and Development Agency, Mayor Marty Walsh and soon to be Interim Mayor Kim Janey should construct a high quality, union built, publicly affordable housing complex for Roxbury residents at 840 Columbus Avenue.
3. Make dorms affordable: no student should have to pay luxury prices, all dorms should be affordable to all students.
4. Implement rent control and tax corporations and the big universities to fund high quality public affordable housing for all.

Political Education Working Group
Political Education Working Group
April 29, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Boston Democratic Socialists of America Boston MA United States 02205
"It’s in making decisions that we learn to decide." - Paolo Friere, Pedagogy of Freedom
Boston DSA's Political Education Working Group meets on the last Thursday of every month at 7 pm, unless we have to move it for a holiday, which happens more often than you'd think. PEWG's goal is to provide our members with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to organize effectively and strategically, and to educate the wider public on DSA's vision for a socialist future and the often-erased leftist movements of the past.
PEWG hosts a number of ongoing projects, such as the chapter's political education blog (bostonpewg.org), our Socialist Fundamentals and Socialist Book Report lecture series, and periodic New Member Reading Groups. We also run one-time (or a-few-times) events such as reading groups, lectures, and panel discussions; and work with other working groups in the chapter to run political education events related to their areas of organization.
Due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, working group meetings and events will be held over Zoom only until it is safe to meet in person. You can request to join the working group mailing list, where we send out meeting agendas and Zoom links, at https://groups.google.com/g/boston-dsa-education-wg. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us at education@bostondsa.org.
